A cuckoo clock is one of the few presents still there when everything else from the same year has long been forgotten. It hangs on the wall, it announces itself on the hour, and in many families it is passed on. That is exactly why it is worth thinking for a few minutes before buying – less about the price than about the person and their home. These questions reach us all year round; here are our answers.
Three questions to settle first
1. Is there a suitable wall?
A mechanical clock needs a load-bearing wall and clear space below it, because the weights descend over the course of the day. Allow at least 60 cm of free drop for a 1-day movement and considerably more for an 8-day movement. A large chalet clock weighs over ten kilograms with its weights.
If you do not know the recipient's home well, small clocks are the safe choice – or an electronic clock, which needs no weights and can therefore hang anywhere.
2. Should it be wound daily?
A 1-day movement is wound every day. Many owners describe exactly that as the best part – a short ritual that belongs to the day. Anyone who travels a lot, or who will hang the clock in a rarely used room, is better served by an 8-day movement. Anyone who would rather do nothing at all, by an electronic clock. 3. Can the household take music?
A music clock plays a melody after the cuckoo call and usually sets the figures in motion. In a house that is an event; in a small flat with thin walls it can become tiring. All our music clocks have a night shut-off – even so, it is worth estimating honestly how often the full hour will actually be welcome.
Presents by occasion
A wedding
Wedding presents are often shared between several guests, and with a cuckoo clock that is a good idea: between 800 and 1,200 euros begins the range where an 8-day movement, a music box and moving figures come together. The 8TMT 5405/10 Fir Chime (840 euros) and the 8TMT 5407/10 Homeland Chime (940 euros) are the obvious models here – both 32 cm tall and therefore not too large for a first shared home.
A milestone birthday or retirement
An occasion that justifies a clock you do not have to wind every day. The MT 6667/9 The Mill (1,140 euros) with its turning mill wheel, or the 8TMT 275/9 Cervus Regalis (1,440 euros) at 48 cm, are clocks that define a room. If you want more of a scene, you will find it among the Chalets.
Moving in, or a first flat
Here what counts is that the clock fits anywhere. The 70/9 Avis Alba (240 euros) and the 1207/9 Forest Clearing (290 euros) are around 22 to 23 cm tall, run mechanically and suit a hallway or a study just as well.
Christmas
The only advice we can give here: order early. In November and December demand for certain models is far higher than during the rest of the year, and we build by hand – a model that sells out is not back overnight.
A memento of the Black Forest

For a child's room
The Q 70/10E Avis Serena (140 euros) runs electronically, needs no winding, and falls silent by itself through a light sensor as soon as the room goes dark. It needs neither drop height nor a particularly load-bearing wall.
By budget
Up to 300 euros: electronic clocks from 140 euros, small mechanical ones from 240. Full clocks from our workshop, simply without music and without figures.
300 to 600 euros: mechanical clocks with a more elaborate case, such as the 45/9 Avis Aurea (390 euros), the 75/9 Mountain Pasture (490 euros) or the 7063/10 Flower Cottage (540 euros). The 8T 90/9 Avis Vinea (590 euros) already brings an 8-day movement to this group.
600 to 1,200 euros: this is where moving figures and music join in – from the 1695/9 Woodchopper (740 euros) through the Fir Chime (840 euros) to the MT 764/10 Mill Cottage (1,040 euros).

What is included
Every clock arrives complete: pendulum, weights, wall fixing and instruction manual. Mechanical clocks come with the VdS certificate of authenticity. Within Germany and the entire EU we ship free of charge, and every clock carries a two-year warranty. A cuckoo clock is ready to run in a good twenty minutes, provided you work in the right order: remove the transport locks, hang it exactly vertically, fit the pendulum and weights, set the time, regulate the rate. In short
Check the wall and the space first, then the question of winding, then the question of music. If you do not know the home, a small mechanical or an electronic clock is never the wrong choice.
