With the right care your cuckoo clock will tick reliably for many decades. Here are our most important tips.

Hanging and aligning
Hang your clock in a sheltered, dry place, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat. It must hang perfectly vertically so the pendulum swings evenly. Check the tick-tock: both beats must be equally long.

Winding
Wind a 1-day movement daily by pulling the weights up on the chain. With an 8-day movement, winding once a week is enough. Never pull the chain sharply.

Cleaning
Dust the case regularly with a soft, dry cloth or a fine brush. Do not use solvents on the wooden case. The movement itself should only be cleaned by a specialist.

Humidity and location
Lime wood reacts sensitively to strong swings in humidity. Ideal is a room humidity between 45 % and 65 %. Avoid positions directly above radiators or in bathrooms, as air that is too dry or too damp can warp the wood and encourage cracks.

Transport and moving house
Before transporting the clock, take off the weights and the pendulum and pack both separately with padding. The hands stay on the clock – they must not be removed. Also secure the bellows inside the case, the way the clock was originally delivered. This prevents damage to the movement while it is carried. After hanging it in its new place, refit the pendulum, align the clock vertically and watch it for a few days.

When to see a specialist
Mechanical cuckoo clocks need a professional overhaul every 8 to 10 years. If your clock runs irregularly or the cuckoo no longer calls, it is time for an inspection.
