A mechanical cuckoo clock needs no electricity, no battery and no electronics. Everything it does – show the time, call on the hour, move figures, play music – comes from the energy of descending weights. Once you understand how that fits together, you look at a cuckoo clock differently.
The energy source: descending weights
Two or three weights, traditionally shaped like pine cones, hang on chains. When you pull the chains, you lift those weights and store energy. Over the course of the day they sink slowly and release it again.
Each weight has a job: one drives the going train, that is the hands; one the striking train with the cuckoo call; and on music clocks a third drives the music box. The mass is therefore not arbitrary: our 1-day movements typically work with 275 g per weight, our 8-day movements with 1,260 to 1,500 g. Hang the wrong weight and the clock either does not run at all or wears faster.
The timekeeper: pendulum and anchor
To stop the weights simply falling, a regulating mechanism holds them back. The pendulum swings at an even rate; with every swing an anchor engages a toothed wheel and lets it advance exactly one tooth. That is the ticking you hear.
Accuracy is set through the length of the pendulum: the carved pendulum leaf slides up and down. Higher up – shorter pendulum – and the clock runs faster; lower down and it runs slower. A shift of a few millimetres changes the rate by several minutes a day.
The call: two pipes and two bellows
The cuckoo call is produced purely acoustically. Inside the case sit two small wooden pipes, each with its own bellows of paper or thin leather. A lever lifts the bellows, which falls back under its own weight and pushes air through the pipe. Two pipes, tuned differently, give the characteristic interval: „cuck-oo“.
That this note sounds warm and slightly irregular is not a flaw – it is what happens when air moves through wood. A loudspeaker can imitate it, but not produce it.
The counting mechanism: how the clock knows how often to call
At seven o'clock the cuckoo calls seven times. The part responsible is the rack: a toothed bar that drops onto a stepped cam. Depending on the hour it drops to a different depth, and the number of teeth released determines the number of calls. On the half hour most models call once.
This principle is purely mechanical and self-correcting – which is why a cuckoo clock finds its rhythm again by itself after a power cut or a move, once it has been set correctly.
Movement: door, dancers, mill wheel
When the striking train releases, a lever opens the little door and pushes the cuckoo forward; its wings and beak are linked to the bellows through the same mechanism. On chalet clocks an additional take-off drives the figure disc on the balcony. The mill wheel, by contrast, usually runs with the going train and turns as long as the clock runs.
Moving figures such as a wood chopper are often coupled directly to the pendulum: as long as the pendulum swings, the axe swings too.
The music box
Music clocks have a cylinder with fine pins that pluck a tuned comb. The number of notes – 22 or 36 in our clocks – is the number of tongues on that comb, and therefore how full the melody sounds. After one melody the mechanism switches to the second piece, which is why you hear two melodies in turn.
The night shut-off
With a manual night shut-off you move a small lever on the side of the case; it blocks the release. An automatic night shut-off uses an additional wheel in the movement that silences the call between evening and morning – on quartz clocks a light sensor does this.
Why this matters for care
All the movements described run on steel pivots in brass bearings. Those bearings need a drop of clock oil every few years – too much oil is more harmful than too little, because it attracts dust.
