CARE & MAINTENANCE
Black Forest cuckoo clocks are robust, long-lasting timepieces. Occasionally wipe the case with a dry, soft cloth. The movement should be cleaned and oiled by a specialist every 5 years. Keep the clock away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations to protect the natural wood.

A Whole Piece of Home on Your Wall
The Schwarzwaldhof isn't a single scene, but a complete piece of home in the finest craftsmanship: beneath the deep, sweeping shingle roof with its finely fringed eave boards, everything that makes up a Black Forest farmstead comes together – the couple on the bench, the men with their beer, the deer at the trough, ducks on the pond, the rushing millstream. And watching over it all, the little bell tower on the ridge.
This clock doesn't just tell time, it tells a whole story. On the curved plaque at its base, its name is burned in: “Schwarzwaldhof” – handcrafted, just as Anton Schneider has done since 1848.
Quitting Time in Front of the Parlor
Under the porch roof of the parlor, in front of the window with its heart-decorated green shutters, two men in traditional dress sit over beer. As soon as the clock strikes, they raise their foam-crowned mugs and toast – hour after hour, as if quitting time never ended. Beside them, freshly split firewood is stacked, past which the farm dog keeps a watchful eye.
It's the most classic of all Schwarzwaldhof scenes: well-earned rest after a day's work, captured in lovingly painted figures.
Music for Two by the Duck Pond
Between the dark green fir trees on the other side of the farmyard, a young couple has settled in: he plays his accordion, she holds a kitten in her lap – a quiet serenade in the midst of the farmyard bustle. At their feet lies the small pond in bright turquoise, on which a hand-painted duck makes its rounds while two more wait on the grassy bank.
When the movement runs, the couple comes to life too – one of the moving elements that give this clock its special charm. Small white crystal stones along the path complete the miniature landscape.
Where the Millstream Rushes
On the left side of the house, the large mill wheel turns, its paddles painted with splashing water – you can almost hear the millstream rushing. As soon as the clock runs, the wheel starts moving and brings the whole farmstead to life.
On the other side, at the hollowed tree-trunk trough beneath the small porch roof, a white-spotted deer has come to drink, while a second waits at the hay rack behind it. So water and wildlife frame the scene – the Black Forest at its most peaceful.
Dancing Beneath the Bell Tower
On the upper-floor balcony, behind the fir-decked balustrade, couples in traditional dress turn to the music in two arched windows – on every full and half hour, accompanied by a 36-note mechanical music box that alternates between playing “Edelweiss” and “The Happy Wanderer.” Between them, the carved little door opens, and the cuckoo announces the hour.
Right at the top of the ridge sits the pointed little bell tower with its small brass bell, which chimes along with the hourly tune – just as the farm bell once called workers home at day's end. At night, the automatic night shut-off brings quiet on its own.
The Mechanical 8-Day Movement
Inside the Schwarzwaldhof works a mechanical 8-day movement – the top class among cuckoo clock movements. Wound once, the clock runs for a full week, driving everything at once: pendulum, cuckoo's call, music box, mill wheel, bell, and the moving figures. Three pinecone weights of 1,500 grams each supply the energy for it.
This design with pendulum and pinecone weights has its roots in the 18th-century Black Forest, where farmhouse clockmaking grew into a world-famous craft tradition. To this day, this principle continues almost unchanged: the descending weights drive the movement, the pendulum sets the tempo. It's wound once a week – a small ritual that has been part of living with a genuine Black Forest clock for generations.
