CARE & MAINTENANCE

Cuckoo clocks from the Black Forest are robust, long-lived timepieces. Wipe the case occasionally with a dry, soft cloth. The movement should be cleaned and oiled by a specialist workshop every 5 years. Keep the clock away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations to protect the natural wood.

We ship every clock carefully packed and fully insured with DHL, usually within 3 to 5 working days. Delivery is free within Germany, across the entire EU and to the United States. For deliveries to the United States all import duties are included in the price as well, there is nothing to pay on delivery. For all other countries the shipping cost is shown during checkout and any customs duties are paid by the recipient. If you are not completely satisfied with your clock, you may return it within 14 days free of charge. A short message to info@schneider-clocks.com is all it takes.

Our best-selling clock, and you can see why at once

Most cuckoo clocks show a scene. The Dachdeckeruhr shows a whole day.

Up on the roof, the roofer is patching the chimney while the cat watches him from a bale of straw. Down below there is sawing and toasting: the farmhand hauls boards, the horse draws the timber sledge up, and at the table two men raise full steins to one another. On the balcony the couples in traditional costume wait for their entrance, and the landlady is already bringing the beer.

No wonder this clock is our bestseller: you stand in front of it and are still discovering something new ten minutes later.

The man on the roof

The roof is covered row by row with individually laid wooden shingles, along with a dormer of its own, complete with a lattice window, a green shutter cut with a heart and a flower box. At the chimney stands the roofer, hammer in hand, his feathered hat pushed back on his head, repairing the masonry.

A little way below him, a cat sits on a bale of straw and watches the scene without moving a muscle. These two figures give the clock its name, and they are the best proof of how far our love of detail goes: even where nobody is looking, someone is standing at work.

It smells of fresh wood here

In the middle of the yard, the sawyer stands at the frame saw and pushes the log into the blade. Beside him the freshly cut boards are stacked, and in front of them lie the shavings, real wood shavings, not painted ones. The farmyard dog stands next to him and watches.

On the left, his colleague comes out of the sawmill with a board on his shoulder, the bottle already in his hand. Behind him the mill wheel turns in the water and drives the saw, just the way it actually worked in the Black Forest for centuries, before electricity arrived.

And afterwards, a toast

To the right of the sawmill, two men in lederhosen sit at the table and raise full steins to one another, head of foam included. A little higher up, on the second balcony, a guest leans at the window while the landlady steps out of the house with two steins in her hand.

These figures are the most elaborate work that comes out of our clock manufactory: individually modelled, individually painted, right down to the facial features, the moustache and the embroidery on the braces. No two are exactly alike.

Before the lorry came the horse

At the far right stands a heavy draught horse in harness, chained to a loaded timber sledge. Beside it a bucket, and under its hooves real scattered grass.

The horse is the proof of how seriously this clock takes its subject: before lorries reached the valleys of the Black Forest, every single trunk was brought out of the woods in exactly this way.

On the hour, the stage belongs to the dancers

Above the dial, a pierced balcony runs across the whole width of the house, decorated with painted garlands of flowers. Behind it the couples in traditional costume are waiting. After the call of the cuckoo they begin to move and turn their rounds, while the 22-note mechanical music box plays “Edelweiss” and “The Happy Wanderer” in turn.

The music manages without electronics: a pinned cylinder plucks the tuned reeds of the music box, driven solely by the power of the weights. At night, the automatic night shut-off keeps the call and the music silent, without the clock having to be stopped.

The mechanical 8-day movement

Inside the Dachdeckeruhr works a mechanical 8-day movement, the premier class among cuckoo clock movements. Wound just once, the clock runs for a whole week and drives everything at the same time: the pendulum, the call of the cuckoo, the music box with the dancing figures, the mill wheel, the sawyer and the roofer. Three pinecone weights of 1,500 grams each supply the energy, one for the going train, one for the cuckoo, one for the music.

This design, with its pendulum and pinecone weights, has its roots in the 18th-century Black Forest, where the clockmaking of the farmhouses grew into a world-famous craft tradition. To this day the principle continues almost unchanged: the descending weights drive the movement, the pendulum sets the beat, clockmaking artistry in its purest form. The clock is wound once a week, by drawing the weights back up on their chains, a small ritual that has been part of living with a genuine Black Forest clock for generations.
